Summer Plumbing Tips to Save Time and Money

Summer is a great time for fun and relaxation, but it also brings increased home activity that can stress your plumbing system. With kids out of school and more gatherings at home, there are more flushes, showers, laundry loads, and dishwashing cycles. Here are some practical plumbing tips to help you save time and money this summer.

1. Leak Detection

  • Why Summer? Winter can be hard on your plumbing, causing hidden damage that’s easier to address in warm weather.
  • What to Do: Inspect all faucets, shower heads, pipes, water heater, outdoor spigots, and irrigation systems. Look for rust, corrosion, leaks, and broken parts using a flashlight to check under cabinets and in dark areas.

2. Water Heater Maintenance

  • Check for Leaks: Look for any signs of leakage, rust, or corrosion. Use a flashlight to inspect around the base.
  • Flush the Tank: Sediment build-up can impede water flow. Periodically flush a few gallons of water from the tank.
  • Vacation Settings: Turn off or adjust your water heater if you’ll be away, using the “vacation” or “low” setting to save energy.
  • Temperature Adjustment: Lower the temperature during summer to save on energy bills.

3. Monitor Water Pressure

  • Check with a Gauge: Attach a gauge to an outdoor spigot to ensure pressure is between 40-45 psi, not exceeding 60 psi.
  • Pressure Regulator: Adjust the pressure regulator if needed, but do so cautiously to avoid damaging your appliances.

4. Know Your Main Water Valve

  • Location and Operation: Locate your main water shutoff valve and know how to use it. Shutting it off when leaving for vacations prevents flooding and water damage.

5. Prevent Clogs

  • Use the Right Tools: Keep plungers and an auger handy for clearing common clogs.
  • Teach Proper Usage: Ensure children know the difference between toilet paper and other tissues, and only flush appropriate items.

6. Guard Against Garbage Disposal Issues

  • Be Selective: Avoid putting stringy, fibrous, or hard items in the disposal. Use cold water and run the disposal before adding food waste.
  • Manage Odors: Run citrus peels through the disposal with cold water and a few drops of dish soap to combat odors.

7. Laundry Room Tips

  • Inspect Hoses: Check washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks, and leaks. Replace damaged hoses, preferably with stainless steel ones.

Following these tips can help you avoid common plumbing issues, ensuring your summer is spent enjoying activities rather than dealing with plumbing problems. If you encounter any serious issues, don’t hesitate to contact Plumb Intended.
